Earthy & Grounded: A Kitchen That Breathes

Earthy & Grounded: A Kitchen That Breathes

Homeowners: Priya & Raj, Leicester | Theme: Earthy Colours

The Brief

Priya and Raj's kitchen was white. Entirely, relentlessly white. White units, white tiles, white walls. It was clean, but it felt clinical — and for a family that cooks every single day, that felt wrong. They wanted warmth, character, and a kitchen that felt like the heart of the home.

The Vision

Earthy colours: terracotta, olive green, warm ochre, and deep clay. Inspired by both Priya's South Asian heritage and the slow interiors movement, they wanted a kitchen that felt grounded — like it had always been there.

The Transformation

They painted the lower cabinets in a deep olive green (Little Greene Sage Derby). Terracotta tiles were added as a splashback behind the hob. Warm wood open shelving replaced one set of upper cabinets. Dried herbs, ceramic bowls, and a small potted plant were styled on the shelves. A single large framed print — a warm geometric in terracotta and gold — was hung on the end wall, turning a dead corner into a focal point.

The Result

The kitchen is now the room everyone gravitates to. Raj says: "People come over and the first thing they say is 'your kitchen is beautiful.' It cost us less than £400 to transform it."

Tips for You

  • You don't need to repaint every cabinet — just the lowers make a dramatic difference.
  • Terracotta and olive green are a foolproof earthy pairing.
  • One large statement print in a kitchen does more than a shelf full of small ones.
