The Earthy Nursery: Calm From Day One

The Earthy Nursery: Calm From Day One

Homeowners: Hannah & Khalid, Sheffield | Theme: Earthy Colours + Natural Textures

The Brief

Hannah and Khalid were expecting their first child and wanted to create a nursery that felt calm, natural, and timeless — not the typical pastel pink or blue. They wanted a room their child could grow into, built around natural materials and earthy tones that would stand the test of time.

The Vision

Warm terracotta, sage green, and natural wood. A room that felt grounded and gentle — inspired by nature, not trends. Botanical prints, woven textures, and soft lighting to create a space that was as restful for the parents as it was for the baby.

The Transformation

One wall was painted in a warm terracotta (Farrow & Ball Red Earth). The cot was natural wood. A woven basket held blankets and soft toys. A mobile of dried botanicals hung above the cot. Two framed botanical prints from Nur & Form were hung on the terracotta wall — delicate line drawings in sage and cream. A rattan nursing chair sat in the corner with a linen cushion. Warm-toned fairy lights were draped along the top of the wall.

The Result

The nursery became the room Hannah and Khalid spent the most time in — even before the baby arrived. "We'd sit in there just to feel calm. Khalid said it was the most peaceful room in the house. That's exactly what we wanted."

Tips for You

  • Earthy tones in a nursery are more timeless than pastels — they grow with the child.
  • Natural materials (wood, rattan, linen) are safer and more beautiful than plastic alternatives.
  • A single bold wall colour in a nursery is more impactful than painting all four walls.
