The Wellness Room: Designing for Rest

The Wellness Room: Designing for Rest

Homeowner: Zainab, London | Theme: Wellness-Inspired Rooms

The Brief

Zainab works in healthcare and was struggling to switch off at home. Her bedroom was functional but stimulating — bright overhead light, a TV on the wall, and a cluttered bedside table. She wanted her bedroom to actively help her rest, not just be a place she slept.

The Vision

A wellness-first bedroom: soft, dim, and deeply calm. Inspired by biophilic design and the slow living movement, Zainab wanted natural materials, soft lighting, and a space that felt like a deliberate act of self-care.

The Transformation

The overhead light was replaced with a warm-toned pendant. The TV came down. White linen bedding replaced the polyester duvet set. A wooden tray on the bedside table held a candle, a small plant, and a book. Trailing plants were placed on the windowsill and a high shelf. A single large framed print from Nur & Form — a soft geometric in sage and cream — was hung above the bed in place of the TV. The walls were painted in a muted sage green.

The Result

Zainab reports sleeping better within a week of the change. "I didn't realise how much my environment was affecting my sleep. The room now tells my brain it's time to rest. That's worth everything."

Tips for You

  • Remove screens from the bedroom — even covering them with a cloth makes a difference.
  • Warm-toned lighting (2700K or lower) signals rest to your nervous system.
  • One large piece of art above the bed is more restful than a busy gallery wall.
